SPARTANS SWEEP WEEKEND

PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia – The No. 8 ranked Trinity Western University men’s soccer extended their unbeaten streak to six matches (5-0-1) with a solid 4-1 win over the University of Northern British Columbia (0-6-0) Sunday afternoon at NCSSL fields in Prince George, B.C.

“The second game saw a few more goals but the message is still the same- we need to continue to do the little things well to be a top side. Overall, we came and got what we set out to do and that is getting the six points. Every point we get will make a difference at the end of the season,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla.

“We had another quality performance was put in by Brayden Gant, who was our man of the match. Cam Parkes, Cody Strelau, and Brayden Volkenant were also very good,” said Rohla.

Despite the lopsided score the quality and number of scoring chances were fairly even throughout the match. TWU finished the afternoon with a 17-15 edge in shots and a 10-8 edge in shots on goal.

Spartans rookie keeper Andre Hicks made seven saves to earn the victory, while the Timberwolves Mitch McFarlane and Tyrone Venhola combined for six saves in the loss.

It was not an individual effort that stood out for the Spartans but their team play. The visitors from Langley, B.C. appeared to be more cohesive than their counterparts. Totaling four different scorers and three separate players credited with the assists.

A perfectly placed shot early in the match from Mitchell Rohla got the Spartans on the board first. Rohla hit a bouncing ball from outside the top right corner of the box that floated up and over top of UNBC keeper, Mitch McFarlane, hitting the top left corner of the net to make the score 1-0 in the 20th minute

Rohla's goal was closely followed by another from Cam Parks; Parks was able to change direction and get himself in front of the Timberwolves net in minute 35. Parks went up and battled with a UNBC defender and goal keeper. In the end it was Parks who was successful in redirecting the free kick from teammate Brayden Volkenant into the back of the Timberwolves net.

“Cam took a hard knock in the back from the keeper in the process. We had been asking to get a body in front of him and it paid off,” said Rohla. “That goal deflated them and it became a question of would we fall into a state of complacency like last game.”

The Spartans lead the entire game. Maintaining a 2-0 halftime lead until Sam Delfs and Jarvis Ambaka were both successful in finding the back of the net in minute 60 and minute 77 respectively, upping the lead to 4-0.

“I think Sam’s goal was our best goal in some time. He continues to impress with his coachability, hard work, and simple play,” said Rohla. “He is pushing our guys for a starting spot.”

The Timberwolves continued to battle against the skill of the Spartans. In the end it was Sourosh Amani who was able to put UNBC on the board with a goal in minute 89. Amani was able to shift around the Spartans defence giving him space to take a shot. His shot was blocked by a charging Trinity Western keeper, with the keeper so far out of net Amani was able to head the rebound past the keeper for the Timberwolves only goal of the game.

“We are still asking our guys to play at higher levels of awareness, focus, and thinking. Right now it is a work in progress. I won’t be content with wins until I believe the performance is right. Never analyze a win but there is a lot more this team is capable of accomplishing if we can continue to strive for more,” concluded Rohla.

The Spartans will remain on the road next weekend when they will travel to Winnipeg to take on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Sat. Sept. 29 at12 p.m. CDT in Winnipeg, then will hope a plane to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal Cougars on Sun. Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. MST.

The Timberwolves will host the University of Calgary on Saturday, Sept. 29 before taking on the University of Lethbridge on Sunday, Sept. 30. Both games will be played at the NCSSL Fields.

Match notes: TWU remains unbeaten in preseason and conference play and currently sit at 9-0-2 overall…the four goals are the most the Spartans have scored in a match since a 4-2 win over Saskatchewan on Oct. 21, 11…
