TRINITY WESTERN (2) AT WINNIPEG (2)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS DROP POINTS TO WESMEN

WINNIPEG – University of Winnipeg midfielder Krzysztof Szulc scored a goal in extra time of the second half to give the Wesmen a stunning come from behind 2-2 tie against the No. 7 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park in Winnipeg.

With the tie Winnipeg gets their first men’s soccer points in Canada West history with their record now at 0-6-1, while the Spartans remain unbeaten in 2012, but see their record go to 5-0-2.

“We forgot that hard work is where you get results, being willing to take the extra step to make a difference. We did not show the moxy that had been our edge,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “We have become too reliant on someone else to carry the load and too passive in missing opportunities.”

“We had an opportunity with today and missed. Tomorrow is a new opportunity that we cannot miss and we need to re-set and be positive in our approach to getting back to our ways of playing, added Rohla.”

Szulc took a perfect pass from Oleg Andrushchyshyn and beat Spartan goalie Evan Lowther with a low shot inside the left post.

Wesmen captain Adam Bromley scored the other goal for Winnipeg (31st minute). Jarvis Ambaka (17th minute) and Spencer Schmidt (19th minute) scored for Trinity Western.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 17th minute, Jarvis Ambaka scored his fourth goal of the season taking a pass in the slot from Spencer Schmidt and beating Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago. The same two players extended the Spartans lead to 2-0, this time Schmidt scored his second marker of the season on a pass from Ambaka.

The Wesmen got some much needed momentum from their captain. Adam Bromley scored his first goal of the season on a perfect free kick in the 31st minute to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.

The score remained 2-1 throughout the final 45 minutes, until Szulc's heroics in extra time made the final score 2-2.

Trinity Western had the better of the play throughout the match and finished with 23 total shots, while Winnipeg had seven. Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago made seven saves while Evan Lowther made five.

“We created plenty of opportunities to but the ball in the net, but failed to convert,” added Rohla. “We let two points get away from us today.

Winnipeg will close out their weekend schedule hosting the UBC Thunderbirds at 12 p.m. at the U of Manitoba Soccer Field, while Trinity Western will travel to Calgary to face Mount Royal.

Match Notes: This season is the Wesmen’s first in Canada West…Today was TWU’s first trip to Winnipeg for a CW soccer match…Winnipeg forfeited earlier wins because of using an ineligible player…
