SPARTANS BACK TO WINNING AGAINST COUGARS

CALGARY  – The No. 7 ranked Trinity Western University men’s soccer team scored two second-half goals to slip past the Mount Royal University Cougars 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Mount Royal Stadium Field in Calgary.

“We had a workman like effort after a big travel day and I was very pleased with our performance, although we should have done better on restarts,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “We have to find ways to take the heart out of a team earlier but overall a good performance by Braden Gant, Spencer Schmidt and our back four looked tight again.”

Second-half substitute forward Spencer Schmidt scored off a free kick in the 59th minute and midfielder Cameron Parkes added another on a long, looping shot in the 87th.

The Spartans remain unbeaten in eight matches with a 6-0-2 record. The Cougars, meanwhile, sport a 2-5-0 record.

TWU keeper Andrew Hicks made one save to earn the shut-out victory, while Mount Royal’s David Thalheimer made eight saves in the loss.

Trinity Western’s goal came because of the work of forward Jarvis Ambaka, a sophomore who hails from Maragoli, Kenya. He went on a long run and was brought down just outside the 18-yard box. The Spartans were awarded a free kick and Schmidt avoided the wall and blasted his shot into the lower right of the net past surprised goalkeeper David Thalheimer.

 “Spencer’s free kick was a quality hard low shot and happy for him that he is back on the page again,” added Rohla.

The second goal was the result of some miscommunication between Thalheimer and a teammate. The ball ended up on Parkes’ foot and he sent an arching kick into the goal before Thalheimer could get back into position.

The Cougars are on the road, technically, next weekend when they face the University of Calgary Dinos Oct. 6-7. Those games both begin at 2:15 p.m.

“Pleased with the three points, but disappointed that we didn’t get six,” concluded Rohla. “But overall good play and looking forward to a rest next weekend.”
 
TWU will have a weekend off before heading to Saskatchewan to play the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Oct.13 and Edmonton to face the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Oct. 14.

Match notes: TWU had the edge in play throughout the match as they finished with 22 shots to MRU’s two…the Spartans also had the edge in corner kicks at nine to nil…Schmidt led Trinity Western with a total of five shots…
