SPARTANS DROP FIRST MATCH OF SEASON TO GOLDEN BEARS

EDMONTON  – The No. 5 ranked Trinity Western University men’s saw their Canada West unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as they fell 2-1 to the No. 4 University of Alberta at Foote Field in Edmonton. The loss gives the Spartans their first loss of the season and drops them to 7-1-2 on the season, while the win moves the Golden Bears to 7-1-3 on the season.

Alberta continues to sit in first place in the Prairie division thanks to 24 points and a 7-1-3 record. Should they remain in first, they will host the Canada West championship tournament, Nov 1-4 as the top seed. Trinity Western sits in second in the Pacific division with 23 points and a 7-1-2 record.

On Sunday, the Golden Bears got goals from Jonah Feil and Zenon Markevych as they opened up a 2-0 lead and then held on for the victory. Those same two also scored for Alberta yesterday when they tied No.2 UBC 2-2, and Markevych finished the weekend with three points as he also snagged an assist on Sunday.

The Spartans got a late goal from Kenyan native Jarvis Ambaka.

Alberta managed a strong start when, in the game’s opening minutes, Jermele Campbell blocked a TWU defensive clearing attempt and had a wide open goal to shoot on, but couldn’t bring the ball under control.

Moments later, Feil found the back of the net for his fourth conference goal and seventh point with help from a nice feed by Markevych. Feil, a fourth-year striker who is originally from Victoria, B.C., is now tied for eighth in Canada West goals and points, while Markevych, who is in his fifth-year, now has eight points in 10 Canada West games.

He earned his sixth goal of the season in the 70th minute when he forced a turnover off the Spartans defence and raced in all alone on TWU goalie Evan Lowther, and slotted the ball along the ground and into the left corner.

Ambaka, who also has eight points on the season, picked up his fifth conference goal when he beat Alberta goalie Jay Vetsch in injury time to ruin the clean sheet, and make the final 2-1.

The Golden Bears travel to southern Alberta next weekend to face the 3-4-4 Lethbridge Pronghorns in a two-game series, while the Spartans host Fraser Valley and Victoria next weekend in Langley, B.C.

Match Notes: TWU had the edge in total shots at 11 to five and corner kicks at five to two…both teams had three offsides and eight fouls…
