Spartans take just over one hour to top Cougars 3-0

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Last night the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team came within half a percentage point of setting a new school record in attack proficiency. Tonight the Spartans obliterated the record with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-13) win over the University of Regina. TWU improved the old record from 53.6% to 61.1%, while committing only four attack errors in 54 attempts.

The Spartans started slow hitting at 47% in the first set, but then they exploded with 70% in the second before closing out the match with 65% in the third.

TWU had five different players with two kills each in the first set as the Spartans jumped all over the Cougars to in the first set. The Spartans pulled out to a big lead right off the start. TWU led 8-2 at the first timeout and moved it to 16-6 at the second timeout. The Cougars made a dent in the lead, but the deficit was too great as the Spartans took the first set 25-13.

Stephen Nash (3rd yr, Abbotsford, BC) led the Spartans in the second set with five kills as TWU took the 2-0 lead with a 25-14 win. The Spartans led 8-4 at the first break and 16-9 at the second before taking the set 25-14.

TWU’s Doug Van Spronsen (3rd yr, Dawson Creek, BC) stepped up in the third set for the home team. Van Spronsen had five kills and two blocks as the Spartans took the third set 25-13. TWU led 8-5 and 16-8 at the two respective timeouts.

Stephen Nash led the 2-0 Spartans with nine kills and six blocks, while Bryan Risselada led the 0-2 Courgars with five kills.

Next up for the Spartans is Friday, November 4 against Thompson Rivers University. Match time against the first time year Canada West team is set for 8 pm.

Match Notes: TWU had the edge in blocks 13-2, service aces 7-2 and kills 37-22... TWU fifth year middle’s Chris Meehan (Clearwater, BC) and Justin Pankratz (Mission, BC) where dressed but did not play...
