Spartans Blanked by Golden Bears
Number one TWU falls in straight sets to number two Alberta

EDMONTON - The number one ranked Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team is no long undefeated in Canada West play. The Spartans (8-1) were handed their first loss by the number two ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears (8-1) Friday night in Edmonton. The Golden Bears took out the Spartans in straight sets winning, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 in a match that took one hour and twenty minutes to complete.

“They played great, while we were out of sorts and we did not play well tonight,” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike. “Will regroup and hope to put on a better show tomorrow night.”

Last season the Bears defeated Trinity Western both times in the regular season before beating them out for the Canada West title. The two teams ended the 2004-05 CIS season with on of the most entertaining championship matches in CIS history. The Bears prevailed in five sets winning 15-13 in the fifth to earn the CIS banner.  From last season's squads, Alberta lost key starters, Aaron Schulha and Jeremy King, while TWU lost their starting Libero, Jaben Schalk.

Dallas Soonias, who spent the summer training with the National program, was easily the best Bear on the night, smashing a game high 16 kills on 23 attempts and just one error.  He also dug up a team high nine Spartan attacks and finished with a 65% attack success rate.

It was the Spartans who beat themselves, as they committed 13 attack errors, compared to Alberta's eight.  TWU had a combined attack rate of just 23% and just 19% in the second set.

Doug Van Spronson (3rd yr, middle, Dawson Creek, BC) recorded nine kills and a 53% kill rate, while Chris Meehan (5th yr, middle, Clearwater, BC) chipped in with a team high 10 kills.  Josh Howatson brought up nine Alberta attacks.

The two power-house teams will meet again tomorrow, 7:00 p.m. in the Main Gym.
