The TWU men’s volleyball team looks to get back to their winning ways in the New Year. After starting the season 8-0 in Canada West league play and earning the number one ranking in the nation the Spartans dropped their final two matches of the semester to the University of Alberta. The losses allowed the defending CIS national champion Golden Bears to regain the number one ranking, while dropping TWU to number two in Canada.

“The team played some very strong volleyball in the first semester in particular vs. UBC and Calgary two division opponents. On the road in Alberta we suffered a bit of a setback losing both however, I know the guys will respond when we take the court again in January,” said TWU head coach Ron Pike.

As the defending CIS silver medalists the Spartans are gearing up for a third consecutive national championship appearance. TWU will have key home games against Alberta on the final weekend of January, before closing out their home schedule against the University of British Columbia on the first weekend of February. A strong showing down the stretch will go a long in helping TWU in their quest to finish in the top spot in Canada West and a trip back to the CIS national championship.

“We are at the point where the details are critical. We need to transition some of the basic work we have done both defensively and offensively into our game play. Our ability to play at a high level throughout the second semester will be important. We are looking to be playing our best volleyball by the middle of February,” added Pike.
