Spartans Head Home with Sweep
TWU gears up for Alberta with weekend sweep of Calgary

CALGARY - The second ranked Trinity Western University Spartans completed a weekend sweep over the University of Calgary Dinos with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) win in Canada West men’s volleyball action Saturday evening. The triumph for the Spartans improves their record to 12-2 while Calgary falls to 2-14 in Canada West competition.

“It was a good match for us tonight, we played steady throughout and our hitting efficiency really stood out for us,” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike.

The Spartans had little trouble winning the opening set 25-18 leading at one time led 20-11.

Trinity Western led 8-7 after the first technical break in the second set. The Spartans took eight of the next 12 points leading 16-11 at the second technical break. The teams essentially split points the rest of the set with the Spartans 25-18.

The third set saw TWU move ahead 8-4 at the technical break. Calgary clawed their way back into the set trailing only 16-14 at the second technical break and at several times closed to within a point before the Spartans went ahead 21-18 forcing Calgary to take a timeout.

Unlike in last evening’s third set TWU, did not give Calgary any momentum and closed out the set and the match winning 25-19 taking seven of the final eight points.

The Spartans had an impressive 51% kill percentage as compared to just 19% for their opponents and were led by Steve Rogalsky who had 17 kills and six digs. Calgary’s top statistical player was Eric von Engelbrechten with nine kills.
