Spartans Swept By Golden Bears
#2 TWU falls three straight to #1 Alberta

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The second ranked Trinity Western University Spartans fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-19) to the top ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears Friday night at TWU.

The Golden Bears came out hitting on all cylinders as they controlled the match out hitting and out serving the Spartans. Alberta finished with 39 kills (34.7%) and seven service aces to TWU’s 28 kills (11.6%) and three service aces.

The first set started with the Golden Bears up 8-6 at the first timeout, but they then opened the gap on the Spartans by going on a 8-4 run to take a 16-10 lead at the second break. Alberta maintained their control of the set as the finished of the game 25-17.

TWU started strong in the second set and match Alberta point-for-point to the first timeout, which had Alberta up 8-7. But once again Alberta took the game from TWU as they finished of the set with a 17-8 run, taking the game 25-15.

The third set was similar to the first two. The two teams matched each other to the first break. Then the Golden Bears built a 16-12 lead at the second break before taking the match 25-19.

Jeff Stel (Langley) with seven kills, and Steve Rogalsky (Maple Ridge) with nine kills, led the Spartans, while Dallas Soonias (Red Deer, Alta.) with 11 kills, five digs and one ace and Nicholas Cundy (Edmonton, Alta.) with nine kills, six digs and four service aces led the Golden Bears.

The two teams will match-up again tomorrow night at TWU. Match time is set for 8 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU has now lost nine straight to the Golden Bears...Alberta is the only team to beat TWU in conference play this season...
