SPARTANS MAKE IT LOOK EASY
#2 TWU quickly disposes of #5 UBC in straight sets

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The second ranked Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team rebounded strong after last week’s losses to number one Alberta with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-16) win over the fifth ranked University of British Columbia. The Spartans took just over an hour to improve their record to 13-4 and take over second place in the Canada West. While the loss drops the Thunderbirds (12-5) to third place.

TWU had a strong overall team effort with all players on the court contributing evenly in the win.

The Spartans got out to an early lead in the first set leading 8-4 at the first break. TWU continued to force their game on UBC and built up a 16-7 lead going into the second break. The Thunderbirds were unable to close the gap on the Spartans as TWU cruised to a 25-15 first set win.

Justin PankratzThe second set was closer heading into the second timeout where TWU led 16-13. Shortly after the timeout the Spartans put together a six point run with two big blocks at the net by Justin Pankratz (5th year, middle, Mission, BC), which pushed the lead to 22-15. TWU then sided out with UBC to take the second set 25-17.

Set three was all Trinity Western as they closed out the match with a 25-16 win.

Seth Schalk (4th year, leftside, Red Deer, Alta.) had a solid game with seven kills and a high kill efficiency of 64%. He also had three aces in the match. Jeff Stel (4th year, outside, Langley) led all players in the match with 10 kills.

Colin Bell (Chestermere, Alta.) led the Thunderbirds with seven kills and hit at 55%.

The rematch for these two teams is set for tomorrow night at 8 pm in the David Enarson gymnasium.

Match Notes: TWU hit at 39%, while UBC hit at 13%... TW had 8.5 team blocks; while the Thunderbirds had two ... Trinity Western had eight service aces, to the Thunderbirds one...TWU took this season’s two previous meetings 3-0, 3-1 at UBC in November...
