STRAIGHT SETS FOR SPARTANS
Win over UBC allows TWU to host first round play-off matches
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team made quick work of the University of British Columbia Saturday night, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) in just over an hour. The second ranked Spartans are now 14-4 on the season, while the fifth ranked Thunderbirds now fall to 12-6. The weekend sweep of the Thunderbirds locks down second place in the mountain division for the Spartans. TWU will now head to Saskatoon, Sask. to play the Huskies, before heading home to host Manitoba or Winnipeg in the first round of the Canada West playoffs. The winner will advance to the Canada West final four and earn a spot in this years CIS national championship in Hamilton, Ont.
The Spartans came out strong tonight and quickly took control of the match and after a big hit from Steve Rogalsky (3rd year, rightside, Dawson Creek, B.C.) TWU found themselves with a 16-11 at the second break of the set. The Spartans went on to easily win the first set 25-18.
The second set was all Spartans as they made quick work of the Thunderbirds winning 25-14.
In the third set the Thunderbirds were more energized and matched the Spartans to 11-11. Then Rogalsky served up two straight aces that led the Spartans into the second break, up 16-12. TWU continued to dominate winning the third set 25-16.
Rogalsky led all players in the match with nine kills, eight digs and two aces. Seth Schalk (4th year, leftside, Red Deer, Alta.) had a solid game as well with eight kills and hit an impressive 55%.
Match Notes: TWU hit at 41%, while UBC hit at 16%... TW had six aces; while the Thunderbirds had one... Trinity Western had 27 digs, to the Thunderbirds 18...Tonight’s match was the last regular season home match for TWU fifth year’s Chris Meehan (middle, Clearwater), Justin Pankratz (middle, Mission) and Jeff Lindemulder (libero, Calgary)...During their five year careers the three have only lost to UBC once, 3-1 on Feb 7, 2004. Over the five years the Spartans have amassed an amazing 22-1 record over the Thunderbirds...
