Spartans Sweep Huskies
#2 TWU heads into post season with two straight wins over #3 Saskatchewan
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – The number two ranked Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team needed more late heroics to come from behind to defeat the third ranked University of Saskatchewan 3-2 (21-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-18, 15-11) Saturday night in Saskatoon, Sask. The win moves the Spartans to 16-4, while the loss drops the Huskies to 15-5.
The Spartans will now return home to open the playoffs against the University of Winnipeg. TWU will play a best of three series, Thursday-Saturday, February 16-18 with all matches starting at 8 p.m. Saskatchewan will host the University of British Columbia.
Doug van Spronsen with 18 kills and Jeff Lindemulder with 14 kills led the Spartans, while Hart Spencer with 17 kills and Joel Ens with 16 kills led the Huskies. TWU’s Josh Howatson and Saskatchewan’s Joel Ens each had 12 digs. The Spartans Justin Pankratz finished with nine blocks, while the Huskies Mark Dodds led all players with five service aces.
Match Notes: TWU outblocked Saskatchewan 18.5 to 8.5...the Huskies hit at 22%, while the Spartans hit at 33%...
