#7 Winnipeg gives #2 TWU everything they can handle
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team opened the Canada West quarter finals by winning the first match of the best of three series 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 28-26, 25-17) over the University of Winnipeg. The second ranked Spartans (16-4) survived and early scare from the seventh ranked Wesman (12-8) when they lost the first set, but rattled off three straight sets to take the match Thursday night at TWU.
The Wesmen stunned the local Spartan fans as they started fast and jumped out to an 16-9 lead at the second timeout. The lead was too much for TWU to overcome as Winnipeg easily won the set 25-16.
TWU started much better in the second set having an 8-5 lead at the first break. The Spartans continued to play well and had a six point lead at 19-13 following a block by Josh Howatson (4th year, setter, Victoria). Both teams traded off points and Doug Van Spronsen (2nd year, middle, Dawson Creek, B.C.) closed out the set with a block as TW won 25-20.
The third set was setting up for a close battle as the Wesmen had a one point lead at the second timeout 16-15. The two teams battled for each point then, after TWU fought off a set point at 24-23, the Spartans were able to tie the set at 25-25. The Spartans then took control of the set after unbelievable dig from Steve Rogalsky (3rd year, rightside, Maple Ridge, B.C.) followed by a block from Chris Meehan (5th year, middle, Clearwater, B.C.) tied the set. Trinity Western used the momentum to take a 27-26 lead. Then Rogalsky stepped back and ripped an ace to finish off the set 28-26.
The match looked like it was going to go to five sets after Winnipeg jumped out to a 5-0 lead. But the Spartans settled down and found a grove that enabled them to go on a 16-7 run to take a 16-12 lead at the second timeout. That was all TWU needed as they closed out the match 25-17.
The Wesmen’s Ben Schellenberg (Winnipeg) led all players with 18 kills, while the Spartans were led by Steve Rogalsky with 13 kills and two aces.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night for the second match of this best of three series. The match is set to start at 8pm in the Enarson gymnasium.
Match Notes: TWU hit at 35%, while U of W hit at 23%... TW had 10 blocks; while the Wesmen had six... the Spartans had seven aces to Winnipeg’s five.
