FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEEHAN IS MAGNIFICENT AS SPARTANS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS
#2 TWU ends season for #7 Winnipeg with 3-1 win

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Chris Meehan (5th year, middle, Clearwater, B.C.) put in a spectacular effort in the Spartans victory Friday night at TWU’s Langley campus. He hit at 92% and finished the match with 12 kills and zero hitting errors. If that wasn’t enough Meehan also added eight service aces and three blocks to help his team past the University of Winnipeg 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-16).

“That is the best statistical line that I have ever seen,” commented TWU assistant coach Ben Josephson. “What makes it even more impressive is that it was done by a ‘big’ man,” added TWU head coach Ron Pike.

The win allows Trinity Western (17-4) to complete the series sweep 2-0 over the Wesmen (12-9). With the win the Spartans qualify for both the Canada West playoffs and the CIS national championship.

The match started off with great serving from Meehan, which included two aces that sent TWU on a four point run giving them the lead 15-11 about half way through the first set. Winnipeg closed the lead to one point, trailing 20-19 late in the set. Winnipeg then proceeded to take the lead at 23-22 after a missed kill from Steve Rogalsky (3rd year, rightside, Maple Ridge, B.C.). Another kill error from Seth Schalk (4th year, leftside, Red Deer, Alta.) finished the set with the Wesmen winning 25-23.

TWU had a similar four point lead at the second timeout 16-12 in the second set. The Spartans continued to improve as the set progressed as TWU took the set 25-18.

Led by the serving of Steve Rogalsky with five aces, the Spartans took control of the third set early going up 10-5, and by the second timeout the lead grew to seven at 16-9. TWU dominated the rest of the set winning 25-10. The Spartans finished the set with a combined six aces.

In the fourth set Trinity Western established a lead again at the second break, 16-11. That was all the Spartans needed as they closed out the match 25-16.

The Wesmen’s Richard Wiebe (Winnipeg) led all attackers with 13 kills. On any other night TWU’s Steve Rogalsky would have the stat line of the night. Rogalsky finished with 12 kills, five aces, two blocks and one dig.

Match Notes: TWU hit at 45%, while U of W hit at 22%... TW had 16 aces; while the Wesmen had four... the Spartans had seven blocks to Winnipeg’s one....the 16 team aces is the second most in school history. The record of 19 was set against Winnipeg on Jan. 24, 2004...Meehan’s final stat line; 12 kills, 0 errors, 13 attacks, 92.3%, eight aces, two service errors, three digs, three blocks...
