TWU sweeps past injury riddled Saskatchewan Huskies
EDMONTON – An injury depleted University of Saskatchewan Huskies were no match for the #2 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans in the second semi-final of the men's Canada West Volleyball Final Four tournament, at the University of Alberta's Main Gym, losing in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-15 and 25-23.
The #3 ranked Huskies were playing without fifth year and Team Canada member, Darren Dove, FISU Team Canada Member, Kris Brand and Canada West Player of the Year Mark Dodds, who returned to the program this season, played hurt and only, appeared in two sets.
Trinity Western, powered by third year right-side hitter Steve Rogalsky, took full advantage of the banged up Huskies, winning the opening sets by nine and 10 points respectively.
With Dodds in and out of the line-up and strong contributions from Joel Ens, Hart Spencer and Cole Hintz, Saskatchewan made the third set close, losing out by two in the end, 25-23.
The Spartans owned a 50% attack success rate in the opening set, while the Huskies found themselves committing more attack errors than kills.
By the end of the match, Saskatchewan had committed 22 attack errors on 81 attempts and just 29 completed kills.
Rogalsky and the Spartans averaged a 36% attack rate through three sets, with Rogalsky nailing the game high in kills with 11. Jeff Stel banked eight, while Doug Van Spronson turned seven of eight attack attempts into points, an 88% kill rate. Seth Schalk and Josh Howatson brought up six digs each.
Ens led the Huskie attack, putting down 10 kills, but also chalked 10 attack errors, in a frustrating night for the Saskatchewan players. Hart Spencer managed nine kills and a team high in digs with six. Dodds, playing in just two sets, had one kill and one dig. Rookie setter, Cole Hintz, put up 16 set assists.
The Trinity Western Spartans will meet rival, Alberta Golden Bears tomorrow night, at 8:30 PM, for the Canada West Gold, their second consecutive meeting in the final. Saskatchewan will face #4 ranked Manitoba Bisons for the bronze at 6:30 PM in the Main Gym.
