#1 Alberta Sweeps #2 TWU to take Canada West Title
EDMONTON –The University of Alberta made it two straight Canada West championship’s by defeating the Trinity Western University Spartans in three straight sets, Saturday night before 1200 fans in Edmonton.
Winning by set scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18, the #1 ranked Bears continued their impressive win streak against the #2 Spartans.
Alberta downed Trinity Western last year in the CIS final and in last season's Canada West final. In the last two seasons the Bears are 8-0 in conference play and 10-1 overall against the Spartans. Their last
conference loss against Trinity came on January 10, 2004, a 3-2 setback in the David E. Earnson Gym on TWU campus.
“It was a tight first two sets and we had our chances, but didn’t finish them off,” said TWU head coach Ron Pike. ”It’s a little disappointing to lose again, but we will keep plugging away.”
The Spartan offence was powered by Seth Schalk who finished with eight kills, a team high 64% attack rate and the co-lead in digs with five. Teammate Jeff Stel also managed eight kills, while Canada West
First-Team All-Star Meehan and Justin Pankratz put down six each. Libero Jeff Lindemulder brought up five digs to share top defensive honours with Schalk.
Posting a game high 88% kill percentage (7-8, no errors) as well as two set assists, one dig, one solo block and four block assists, Leo Carroll, who was playing in his final game on his home court, was named player of the match. Carroll posted a match high 88% kill percentage by going 7-8 with zero errors. Carrol added one dig, five blocks to his totals.
Gaumont-Casias, last season's Canada West Rookie of the year, led the Bears attack with nine kills and also posted six digs. Soonias banked eight kills, Cundy five, setter Brock Davidiuk managed three to go along with his 29 assists, while Kaminski aside from his game high five blocks, also put down four kills on six attempts. Canada West Libero of the year, Justin Wong brought up six digs and Soonias managed the same numbers as well.
Both teams will now pack their bags for next weeks CIS National Championship in Hamilton, Ont. The championships will open play on Friday, March 3, 2006. Seeding of the tournament has not been completed, but will most likely have Alberta and TWU ranked #1 and #2.
