Meehan Named CIS VIA Rail Athlete of the Week
TWU’s Chris Meehan caps amazing season with one more award.
Langley, British Columbia – TWU’s Chris Meehan (Clearwater, B.C.) was awarded the CIS Athlete of the Week award for his outstanding performance at last weekend’s CIS men’s volleyball championships in Hamilton, Ont.
The fifth-year business major led the TWU Spartans men’s volleyball team to their first CIS national championship with a dominating 3-0 (25-21, 25-8, 25-16) performance over the #1 ranked University of Alberta. In addition to the gold medal the Spartans were awarded the CIS championship R.W. Pugh Fair Play Award.
The championship capped an amazing week for Meehan. He received his second First-Team All-Canadian award on Thursday morning. He was named player of the game in TWU’s 3-0 CIS quarter-final win over Queen’s University on Friday. He helped his team to an amazing come from behind 3-2 victory over Manitoba in the CIS semi-final on Saturday. Then in Sunday’s gold medal match Meehan’s performance propelled his team to their first ever CIS gold medal. For his efforts Meehan was named player of the game. Then to cap off the weekend Meehan was awarded the CIS championship MVP award.
Meehan finished the weekend with 26 kills, 8 aces, 14 blocks and 9 digs. In the championship match Meehan hit at 66% with 7 kills, 5 aces, 2 blocks and 2 digs in the quick three set match.
The gold medal is the third CIS championship medal for Meehan and the Spartans men’s volleyball team. Prior to this years gold medal they earned silver in 2004-05 and bronze in 2003-04.
The championship match was the final match for TWU’s captain. Meehan will finish his career with a number of TWU records. Meehan holds the TWU match records in attack percentage at .789 (min. 10 attacks), block assists with 14, and total blocks with 16. He holds the TWU season records in total blocks with 158 set in 2003-04 and block assists also set in 2003-04. He will finish the TWU all-time career leader in solo blocks at 62, block assists at 446, and total blocks at 508 and blocks per game average with 1.16.
Chris Meehan is only the second TWU student-athlete to be named CIS Athlete of the week. TWU’s Jodi Schaufele (women’s volleyball) received the award earlier this year.
The Complete Champion Approach helps Spartan Student-Athletes become complete people and champions in all areas of their lives. This program seeks to address the whole person (spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, and social). The Complete Champion Approach is designed to help student-athletes use their God-given talents and intellect to live a life of significance, experiencing true personal success and powerfully influencing their family and their community.
As official members of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, the Spartans compete in six sports in the Canada West division of the CIS: Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball. During their seven years as members of the CIS and Canada West TWU has won two national championship; men’s volleyball in 2005-06, women’s soccer in 2004-05 , two Canada West titles; one in women’s soccer in 2004-05 and one in men’s soccer in 2005-06. The Spartans have won five CIS championship medals. Men’s volleyball took gold this year, silver in 2004-05 and bronze in 2003-04, women’s soccer won gold in 2004-05, and men’s soccer earned bronze in 2005-06
