Two Spartans Selected to Represent Canada

WINNIPEG – Two players from the Trinity Western University Spartans men’s volleyball team have been selected to play for Canada’s Junior National Team this summer. Left side Marc Howatson (Victoria, B.C.) and middle Rudy Verhoeff (Calgary) will represent Canada at the 2008 NORCECA Junior Continental Championship taking place June 28 – July 6 in San Salvador, El Salvador.

“We are really excited about the opportunity for Marc and Rudy to play for Team Canada this summer,” says TWU men’s volleyball head coach Ben Josephson. “The coaching they will receive and the experience of playing abroad representing your country is second to none. I'm so very proud that they will be representing TWU Spartan Men's Volleyball as they are two great ambassadors for us and I'm sure they will be for Canada as well.”

The purpose of the Junior National Team Program is to identify, select and train a group of young athletes who have future Senior National Team potential and offer them the opportunity to train and represent Canada in international competition at an earlier age. Howatson and Verhoeff, who will be in their second years at TWU this fall, were among a group of Canada’s best young players who competed for 14 spots during a four day Selection Camp held recently in Winnipeg.

The team will now train at Lipsett Hall in Winnipeg until their departure.
