FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS PLACE TWO ON CANADIAN BEACH NATIONAL TEAM
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Volleyball Canada announced that current Trinity Western University men’s volleyball leftside Steven Marshall of Abbotsford, B.C. and Spartan alum Chaim Schalk (‘09) from Red Deer, Alta. have been named as two of the seven athletes who will be recommended for carding as part of the 2010 Beach National Team.
"We are really excited for Steve and Chaim and their opportunity with the Beach National Team. This selection is a reflection of their hard work and dedication to their overall skill development. To be successful on the beach an athlete cannot have any holes in their game,” commented TWU head men’s volleyball coach Ben Josephson. “We pride ourselves on these types of athletes at Spartan men's volleyball. These are two of the best all around players our program has ever seen. With this selection it is apparent the National Team believes so too."
In addition to Marshall and Schalk the following athletes will be nominated for 2010 carding in the Learning To Win (L2W) category: Men: Dan Dearing (Toronto, ON), Maverick Hatch (Vancouver, BC), Martin Reader (Courtenay, BC), Christian Redmann (Oro Station, ON), Ben Saxton (Balzac, AB).
Volleyball Canada will nominate additional athletes for 2010 carding following the Training To Compete (T2C) selection camp to be held in Toronto next spring.
The Athlete Assistance Program, or AAP, is a federal government program administered by Sport Canada that provides financial assistance and tuition support to over 1,800 amateur athletes in Canada.
Also referred to as “carding”, AAP funding is intended to contribute to an athlete’s living and training costs. It is not intended to serve as the athlete’s sole source of income.
The AAP (carding) recognizes the commitment an athlete makes to long-term training and competitive programs and seeks to relieve some of the pressures associated with participation in international sport. In particular, the AAP provides financial assistance to Canadian high-performance Beach volleyball players to seek out enhanced training opportunities to progress their performances. The assistance helps athletes with their training and competition needs and goes directly to the athlete. The AAP is the only Sport Canada program to provide direct financial support for athletes.
The Sport Canada Athlete Assistance Program funds Beach volleyball players at two levels: Senior Cards (Training to Win - T2W) and Development Cards (D card). The senior cards are broken into three categories: Sport Canada senior international criteria, Volleyball Canada International criteria and Volleyball Canada selection camp criteria. The development cards are broken into two categories: Learning to Win (L2W) and Training to Compete (T2C).
