LANGLEY, British Columbia – This week the No. 7 Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team will open the Canada West Final Four against the No.4 University of Calgary Dinos Saturday afternoon at noon at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. The other semi-final will feature the No. 3 University of Alberta Golden Bears taking on the No. 9 Thompson Rivers University WolfPack at 2 p.m. With all four team having already qualified for the CIS championship next week at TRU in Kamloops, this weekend’s tournament will primarily serve as seeding for next week’s championship.

LANGLEY, British Columbia –The No. 8 Trinity Western University Spartans play host to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies this Friday night at 8 p.m.. This is the first of two matches to be played at the Langley Events Centre this weekend the two teams will follow it up with a second game on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Spartans are on a mission to host the first round of the play-offs. However, the competition is tight in Canada West, so they must first focus on securing a play-off spot.

LANGLEY, British Columbia –The No. 4 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans will host the University of Regina Cougars for Tonight’s match. The Spartans come into the match suffering a pair of losses to the University of Alberta (1-3, 1-3). The Regina Cougars also suffered a pair of losses. They were swept by the UBC Thunderbirds (0-3, 0-3). Leading the way for the Spartans last week was second year outside Steven Marshal (Abbotsford, B.C.) who recorded 35 kills in the losing efforts. The Cougars received contributions from third year outside Jamie Wilkins (Regina) and second year outside Colin Finch (Regina) both with 14 kills in their losing efforts.
NUMBER ONE’S WITH A BULLET

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western University men’s volleyball coach Ben Josephson wasn’t content with getting just one of the top high school players available for the 2010-2011 season. Instead the Spartans head coach decided to go out and get the top high school player out of British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba to attend TWU this fall. Making commitments to the Spartans are Nick Bianco from Surrey, B.C., Branden Schmidt from De Winton, Alta. and Devyn Plett from Winnipeg.

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Volleyball Canada announced that current Trinity Western University men’s volleyball leftside Steven Marshall of Abbotsford, B.C. and Spartan alum Chaim Schalk (‘09) from Red Deer, Alta. have been named as two of the seven athletes who will be recommended for carding as part of the 2010 Beach National Team.

LEARNING ON THE ROAD AHEAD

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Competing at the CIS championships has always been one of the goals of Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team. As is the case with most programs the Spartans had a strong run with four straight appearances, including a CIS title in 2006, followed by a rebuilding time. In 2008 the Spartans were on the road for play-offs, last year they finished third in Canada West at 11-7 and hosted the first round of Canada West play-offs and were a few points shy of returning to nationals after falling two games to one to Thompson Rivers. This year, with a mix of youth and experience, the Spartans hope to continue their upward trend and make it back to the CIS championships.
