FIVB YOUTH WORLDS
DEL BIANCO TO COMPETE AT FIVB YOUTH BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western University’s Nick Del Bianco is set to take on the world.
The Surrey, B.C. product, who will join the Spartans this fall, is in Espinho, Portugal for the 2010 FIVB Youth Beach Volleyball U-19 World Championships that run from July 28 – Aug. 1.
Del Bianco, along with his new playing partner Garrett May of Toronto, Ont., will enter the competition as Canada’s number one team and best hope for success.
"I am really excited and anticipating a great tournament," Del Bianco said. "I believe that we have everything it takes to become world champions and I can't wait to prove that to the rest of the world."
This will be Del Bianco’s second crack at the youth world championships, but his first with May. Last year, the future Spartan entered the tournament with long-time partner and friend Ben Chow. This year, however, Volleyball Canada deemed Del Bianco as the top blocker in the country and matched him up with May, who is considered the country's best defender.
"Switching partners was definitely a big change because I've been with the same partner for the past 4 years," Del Bianco said. "As anyone could imagine, to begin with it was a little weird, but I went into the situation with a positive attitude and I believe it has helped me mature as a player and as a person in general."
Last year, Del Bianco and Chow finished ninth at the championships in Turkey.
Of the four teams Canada is sending to the championships (two men’s and two women’s), Del Bianco is the lone player from Western Canada. Five of his teammates are from Ontario and two others are from Quebec.
Canada’s second men’s team consists of Grant O’Gorman (Ont.) and Aaron Nusbaum (Ont.). Canada’s top women’s team is made up of Jennifer Cross (Ont.) and Melissa Humana-Paredes (Ont.) while the second women’s tandem has Catherine Larose (Que.) teamed with Sara Robichaud (Que.).
