DEL BIANCO FINISHES FOURTH AT FIVB WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
Trinity Western University’s Nick Del Bianco came oh so close to a podium finish at the 2010 FIVB World Youth Beach Volleyball Championships in Portugal this past weekend but, in the end, he had to settle for fourth.

The Surrey, B.C. native, playing alongside Toronto’s Garrett May, went into the U-19 event as Canada’s top entry and, although the pair left Portugal disappointed with their finish,  proved they can compete with the best in the world.

"The experience that came with the tournament was one that I will never forget and the lessons learned there will stick with me forever," Del Bianco said. "However the fourth place finish is quite disappointing for me because I still strongly feel that we were the best team there. We just had a rough semifinal match and therefore weren't able to show that with our result. I do think 4th in the world is truly a great accomplishment, just one that I'd like to better sometime in the near future."

The newly partnered tandem – Del Bianco played with long-time partner Ben Chow at last year’s tournament, finishing ninth – rolled through the four-team pool portion of the event with a 3-0 record and, in doing so, didn’t drop a single set. The only other team to be perfect in the round robin was fellow Canadians Aaron Nusbaum and Grant O’Gorman.

Del Bianco and May won their next two games, knocking off teams from Italy and Russia, before falling in a three-set semifinal to the Russian pair of Artem Kucherenko and Maxim Anufriev (21-19, 16-21, 15-13).

The Canadian duo then lost to the German team of Lorenz Schumann and Dominik Stork (21-10, 21-19) in the bronze medal game.
