OTTAWA (CIS) –
Volleyball players Rudy Verhoeff of Trinity Western and Shanice Marcelle of UBC are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending March 6, 2011.

Verhoeff, a fourth-year religious studies student from Calgary, earned tournament-MVP honours at the CIS championship after the Spartans claimed the second title in team history on their home court in Langley, B.C. The 6-foot-5 middle registered a rare hat-trick as he was named player of the game in each of Trinity Western’s three contests. The second-team all-Canadian led the team in kills in every game tallying 21 in a five-set win over Alberta in the opening round, 19 in a 3-2 defeat of 2010 CIS champion Calgary in the semis, and 11 in a 3-0 sweep of Brandon in Sunday’s title match.

Basketball players Simon Farine of Dalhousie, Evens Laroche of Concordia and Jamie Searle of Lakehead were the other male nominees.

Marcelle, a third-year human kinetics major from Victoria, was named tournament MVP after she helped the Thunderbirds capture their fourth consecutive national title in Quebec City, and set an all-time mark with eight banners since the inaugural CIS championship in 1970. The 6-foot outside hitter recorded a game-high 13 kills in a four-set quarter-final win over Sherbrooke, led UBC in kills (16), points (17.5) and digs (19) in a 3-0 semifinal victory over Alberta, and rounded out her dream weekend with a 13-kill effort in a dominating straight-set defeat of tourney host Laval in Sunday’s gold medal final. Marcelle had already been named CIS player of the year prior to the championship.
