CANADA WINS FIRST MATCH AT WORLD JUNIOR MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP![]()
Niterói, BRAZIL – Canada, with Trinity Western's Lucas Van Berkel (Edmonton, Alta.), Branden Schmidt (Winton, Alta.) and Brad Kufske (Abbotsford, B.C.) won its first match at the men’s world junior volleyball championships on Friday morning defeating Japan 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 to kick off the consolation playoff round.
The Canadians, 0-3 in round robin play this week, were led by Tristan Aubry of Edmonton with 14 points on nine attacks, four blocks and one service ace. Nicholas Hoag of Sherbrooke, Que., and Van Berkel of Edmonton added 11 points each.
“This game was a lot better for us,’’ said Canadian team captain TJ Sanders of London, Ont. ‘’We didn't know much about Japan. This was a big win for us. We hope to go on from here.”
Takashi Dekita, the tournament's leading scorer to this point, led Japan with a match-high 12 spikes along with two blocks and two aces.
Canada out-hit Japan 32-22 and also led in blocks, 16-4 and aces, 9-2. Japan struggled with its receptions.
“It was a great match for us,’’ said Canada’s head coach Georges Laplante. ‘’The blocks made the difference, but now we have to play better defense behind the block.’’
Canada, battling for ninth place, faces Egypt on Saturday and Tunisia on Sunday.
