Athletes of the Week: Rudy Verhoeff, Lindsey Doland

EDMONTON - On the final week of Canada West fall competition Trinity Western University's Rudy Verhoeff and the University of Calgary's Lindsey Doland have been named male and female Canada West Athlete's of the Week.

MALE: #11 Rudy Verhoeff, Trinity Western (volleyball)

Trinity Western middle/leftside Rudy Verhoeff led the No. 1 Spartans with 33 kills,14 digs and six blocks to two wins over Thompson Rivers to give TWU its 10th straight win and remain perfect in CW league play.

Verhoeff led the first place Spartans with 19 kills, seven digs and three blocks in a five set win, of which he played four sets, over TRU on Friday night and then on Saturday night he finished with 14 kills, seven digs and three blocks in a three set win over the WolfPack.

The fifth year Spartan, who was named 2011 CIS championship MVP, currently sits third in Canada West in kills per set at 3.90, seventh in hitting percentage at 33.5 percent and 15th in blocks at 0.93 per game.

The CIS #1-ranked Spartans are off for exams and will be back in Canada West league play against the University of Alberta on January 13 and 14.

FEMALE: #12 Lindsey Doland, Calgary (volleyball)

Lindsey Doland certainly picked the right time to have a career weekend.

With her Dinos team struggling with inconsistency through the first half of the season, Doland stepped up on the final weekend of 2011 and led Calgary to a two-game sweep of UBC Okanagan, evening their record at 6-6 heading into an extended break from conference play.

In Friday’s five set thriller, Doland fired a career-high 20 kills and an impressive 30 per cent efficiency from her left side position to pace the Dinos, adding seven digs and a pair of service aces along the way. A night later, she matched that percentage while contributing 11 kills as the Dinos swept the Heat in straight sets.

The fourth-year Arts student and her team has the bye on the first week of competition in the New Year and return to Canada West action Jan. 20-21 when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies.
