Spartan’s season ends in Alberta
Langley, British Columbia – Close calls epitomized the Spartans season and February 12 provided another. The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team ended their season on the road in Alberta. The Golden Bears (#8 in the nation) slipped past the Spartans (#10 in the nation) 3-2 on February 11 and did the same on the 12th. Game scores for Alberta were 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, and 25-22.
Alberta will likely finish third in Canada West with a record of 14-8, which is good enough for a chance to participate in the post-season. TWU will end in 5th place with a record of 5-17. Even though the Spartans didn’t qualify for the play-offs their season is marked by success. Earlier in the year the Spartans won the York Tournament in Ontario and have also been ranked in the top 10 in the nation most of the second semester.
“We had them at 2-1, but just couldn’t finish. We played well and did a good job hanging in there all season and that says good things about our young guys,” commented Pike.
Luke Bainard (TWU) was again the kill leader with 25. Joe Melissen (TWU) led all players with 18 digs. Pascal Cardinal led Alberta with 20 kills and 6 digs. “Luke lined up against one of the best outside players in our league and out did him in every category. He just had a great weekend with 57 total kills. Joe out-dug one of the best liberos in Canada West this weekend,” noted Head Coach Ron Pike.
