Men’s Volleyball (League)
Friday, February 01, 2002
TWU Spartans (0) at the University of Alberta Golden Bears (3)
(25-19, 25-16, 25-17)

#5 ranked Golden Bears Too Much

Langley, British Columbia –
With the opportunity to host their first ever play-off games on the line this weekend, the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team failed to show up in their match with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The Spartans were did not challenge Alberta, as TWU dropped the match 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17).

“We did not play very well tonight. We showed that we might not be quite ready for the big guys,” said TWU head coach Ron Pike. “ I think our guys have resolved themselves to just being in the play-offs. But I’m not worried about it.”

The lone bright spot for the Spartans was Luke Bainard, but he was not able to carry the Spartans by himself.

Chris Meehan – 8 kills and Luke Bainard – 7 kills led the Spartans, while Sandy Handerson led Alberta with 11 kills. Alberta’s Lucas Snider led both teams with 11 digs.

With the University of Calgary’s 3-1 loss to the University of Winnipeg tonight the Spartans still have an outside chance at hosting a play-off game next Thursday. If the Spartans win tomorrow and the Dinos lose then TWU should host, providing that they win the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker is the difference between games won and games lost, Calgary is currently at –2 and TWU is at –4. If the Dinos remain ahead of the Spartans then TWU will travel to Calgary next week to open their first ever play-offs.

The Spartans finish out the regular season tomorrow night against the University of Alberta.
