Spartans at Dino Cup - Day One

Langley, British Columbia - Trinity Western University's men's volleyball team continued its preseason today with two matches to open the University of Calgary Dino Cup. This afternoon the Spartans defeated the host Dinos 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10), but lost this evening's match to the UCLA Bruins 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 26-24).

This afternoon the Spartans got off to a rough start, and the match became a battle back and forth as to who would dictate the pace. "It came down to who would make the big plays," said TWU coach Ron Pike. "And we did."

TWU fought its way back into the match several times in the fourth and fifth sets, coming back in the fifth after being down 8-5 to take a 10-9 lead, and close it out to win 15-10.

Chris Meehan led Trinity Western with 16 kills and two digs, and Jason Hofer was close behind with 14 kills and three digs. Sean Kendal led the Dinos with 17 kills and four digs.

The Spartan men had to fight an uphill battle tonight against the UCLA Bruins, battling the fatigue of playing eight games in one day, as well as a shortened bench. Starting middle blocker Justin Pankratz injured his ankle in the match against Calgary, and Jason Hofer is unable to play that many games in one day due to knee problems.

"We fought hard tonight," said Coach Pike. "I'm pleased with how we played despite our fatigue and depleted bench. We were in a tough spot physically, and UCLA is a good, big team."

Jeff Stel picked up some of the slack tonight, earning Player of the Match honors with his 14 kills, one service ace, one block and five digs. UCLA was led by Steve Klosterman, who had 11 kills, three digs, one block and one ace.

The Spartan men play again tomorrow, Saturday, at noon against Pacific University. If they win that match they go on to the final at 7:30pm.
