Wounded Winners
Langley, British Columbia - "We have the gold and we're bringing home the wounded"-so goes the story for TWU's men's volleyball team after winning the 17th University of Calgary Dino Cup. The Spartans, living up to their warrior moniker, played a total of eight games again today (after playing eight yesterday), defeating Pacific University 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12) this afternoon to advance to the Cup final tonight where they faced UCLA again and this time defeated them in straight sets, 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 27-25). Just last night the Bruins dropped the Spartans 3-0 but tonight the Trinity Western men battled hard, and against greater odds, having lost another starter (setter Josh Howatson) to an ankle injury, to take the win and the medal.
In this afternoon's match, the Spartans were led by Chris Roy's 20 kills and seven digs, followed by another solid showing by Jeff Stel, who had 17 kills and 13 digs. Pacific was led by Nils Dauburs with 23 kills, 18 digs and two aces. The five-set match was a marathon two hours long.
Tonight the Spartans battled hard and really earned the victory, playing tough physically and mentally. "I'm a very proud coach right now," said TWU head coach Ron Pike. "We had a great effort from everyone, and worked our tails off tonight. The Dino Cup is a premier tournament, and to walk away with the gold is something."
With Justin Pankratz and Josh Howatson sidelined by injuries suffered at the tournament, Trinity Western was forced to turn to two players who were already suffering from knee ailments, Reuben Zuidhoff and Jason Hofer, to fill in. Hofer and Zuidhoff both did awesome jobs, and Hofer was named Player of the Match for the Spartans with his 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Chris Roy again led his team, this time with 15 kills, two blocks and one ace. TWU had an unbelievable kill percentage of 48%, to UCLA's 30%.
The Tournament All-Star Team included two Spartans-Josh Howatson and Chris Meehan-and was rounded out by Nils Daubers (Pacific), Rob Ellis (Calgary), Steve Klosterman (UCLA) and Adam Shrader (UCLA). Chris Roy was named Tournament MVP. Despite his consistent and outstanding performance all weekend, Jeff Stel was not named an all-star.
The Spartan men open their regular season in two weeks, beginning November 8th and 9th, on the road at the University of Manitoba.
