TWU SHUT-OUT BY BYU
Spartans Fall to 1-2 at Can/Am Challenge
EDMONTON, Alberta – Ron Pike, head coach of the defending CIS champion Trinity Western University Spartans, broke out his bench strength Saturday afternoon in a losing cause to the Brigham Young University Cougars, dropping in the three straight sets (25-23, 25-12, and 25-22) during game 11 of the Husky Energy Can-Am Challenge at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
“It a good BYU squad, but we didn’t play well and we couldn’t get any rhythm or momentum going to get back into the match,” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike.
The NCAA win temporarily moves the American schools into a 6-5 lead over the CIS and drops TWU to a 1-2 record in the tournament. BYU jumps into a 2-1 record and big game tonight against the undefeated host Alberta Golden Bears.
Spartan regular contributors Josh Howatson and Seth Schalk saw limited court time, playing only two of the three games and not starting as the Cougars continue to get better as the tournament rolls on.
Third year middle Clayton Peters was the threat for TWU finishing with a sparkling 83% attack success rate on a team high 10 kills on 12 attempts. Doug Van Spronsen was also strong in the middle as the veteran put down six kills.
Hard-hitting junior Puerto Rican outside hitter Ivan Perez continued to impress the Edmonton volleyball fans with his powerful accurate serving (one ace) and attacks (10 kills, two errors). Setter Reed Chilton played well registering 33 assists and scoring three kills, two aces and two digs.
Trinity Western closes out their Can-Am tournament with a game against the Long Beach State 49’ers at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Gym. BYU will face Alberta in the tournament’s final game, 8:00 p.m. in the Main Gym.
