TWU Spartans (0) vs. University of Winnipeg Wesmen (3)
(25-27, 22-25, 18-25)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS BATTLE BUT SEASON ENDS AGAINST WESMEN
WINNIPEG - With their season on the line, the Trinity Western University Spartans fought for their playoff lives Saturday night against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, but despite their best efforts, they fell to the Wesmen in straight sets (25-27, 22-25, 18-25) Saturday night. The Spartans rallied late in the first only to lose a tough set and were close in the second before the veteran Wesmen squad pulled away in the third.
As with all three sets played last night, the first set was close to the midway point, as Winnipeg led 16-14. The Wesmen would then extend their lead by taking five of the next six points and lead 21-16, and despite a quick Spartan run, Winnipeg had set point with a 24-20 lead. But the resilient Spartans put up a big rally when they needed it, rattling off four straight points as a Marc Howatson (Victoria) kill tied the set at 24. The two teams would trade kills before another Wesmen kill got it set point and setter Dustin Addison-Schneider (Brandon, Man.) hammered home a service ace to escape with a first set win.
Sticking to the theme of the weekend, the second set was close early, but this time it was TWU with a lead at the second technical of 16-12 on a Howatson block. Each team would sideout twice when the Wesmen would go on another of their midset runs, taking five straight points, including three kills from fifth year Ben Schellenberg (Winnipeg), to take the lead 19-18. The Spartans quelled the Wesmen momentum with a timeout, and then got three of the next four points to take the lead back 21-20 on a Doug Van Spronsen (Dawson Creek, B.C.) solo block. Winnipeg responded with an Andrew Town (Winnipeg) kill and a Justin Duff (Winnipeg) block to regain the lead 22-21. The Spartans appeared to tie the set on a Howatson kill off the block and into the stands, but one official called the Spartans for a violation off the antenna, and after the referees deliberated, they decided to replay the point. Winnipeg took advantage of the do-over as Schellenberg hammered down a service ace to lead 23-21 and the Wesmen would go on to win the pivotal second set.
The Spartans battled to keep their season alive in the third, but the Wesmen were just as keen to end it, as they lead 16-8 at the second technical. TWU kept fighting, and pulled within six points at 21-15, and then within five at 23-18 on a Steve Rogalsky (Maple Ridge, B.C.) service ace. But Winnipeg got a sideout on a TWU service error, and then Schellenberg finished off the set and the match with a service ace of his own.
In their final matches in a Spartan uniform, Rogalsky led his team in kills with 11, and also added nine digs, and two blocks while Van Spronsen finished with six kills and four blocks. Howatson finished with seven kills and two blocks, and Josh Doornenbal (Edmonton) had six kills and a block assist. Winnipeg was led by Town with 13 kills, Schellenberg with nine kills, 13 digs and three service aces, and Alan Ahow (Winnipeg) finished with seven kills and eight digs.
The loss for the Spartans ends their season, as they finish seventh in the Canada West standings. The Wesmen advance to the Canada West Final Four next weekend in Edmonton, where they will be the second seed.
Match Notes: With his two solo blocks Van Spronsen set a single season record for the Spartans with 25 solo blocks. Rogalsky finishes his career with TWU records for kills in a career (1574), kills per game in a career (3.14), attack attempts (3599), kills in a season (413-2004), attack attempts in a season (919-2004), attack attempts in a match (61-Alberta, Mar. 6, 2005), service aces (13-Winnipeg, Jan. 24, 2004), games played (501) and matches played (142). In addition to his solo block record Van Spronsen finishes his career with TWU records for solo blocks in a match (5-Manitoba, Jan. 13, 2008).
