TWU SPARTANS (3) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA BISONS (1)
(13-25, 25-19, 30-28, 25-16)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS OVERCOME SLOW START TO WIN IN FOUR
MANITOBA – The No. 8 Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team used a 16 kill night from outside Steve Marshall of Abbotsford, B.C. to knock of the No. 6 University of Manitoba Bisons 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 30-28, 25-16) Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre located on the University of Manitoba campus. The win keeps the Spartans unbeaten at 5-0, while the loss drops the Bisons to 4-4.
“The guys showed a tremendous amount of toughness on the road as they were able to slow down a hot Bisons team. They were able to focus, stay disciplined and stay patient and they looked to each other for energy from each other,” commented TWU head coach Ben Josephson. “All the guys who had bad first sets were able to correct their game and recover, which is the mark of a veteran player and a good team. We as coaches were pleased to see that trait develop with this group - that they can have a tough game and find a way to recover.”
The Bisons came out very strong to start the match and dominated the first set, 25-13, to take the early lead in the match. “The first set was the worst that we have played all season,” commented Josephson. “So we kind of laughed it off. We knew it was bad.”
Manitoba continued their strong play to start the second set, but Trinity Western gradually took control and tied the match with a 25-19 second set win.
The third set would prove to be the pivotal game. Neither team was willing to give their opponent the advantage as they battled into extra points. The Spartans eventually prevailed 30-28 to take the 2-1 lead.
The final set was even early, but TWU would eventually get the spread that they needed as they took the opening match with a 25-16 fourth set win.
Leftside Chris Voth led the Bisons with 13 kills for the night, and leftside/libero Ryan Munt leading the night in digs with nine.
The Bisons and Spartans will face each other again tomorrow night, Saturday, November 21, at the Investors Group Athletic Centre at the U of M campus. The first serve will take place after the Bisons women’s volleyball match; expected time is 7:30 p.m. CT.
