WESMEN WIN IN FIVE, SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Trinity Western University Spartans with a come from behind 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 25-14, 15-13) victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen trailed 2-1 but came back to win the fourth and fifth sets to win the match and earn a two match weekend sweep over the fifth ranked Spartans. Winnipeg beat the Spartans 3-2 in the opening match Friday night.

The Wesmen win their sixth match in a row and push their record to 8-5. The Spartans head home with a record of 8-6.

Andrew Town and Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 12 kills each. Maurice Williams added eight. Dan Lother was solid at the setter position with 40 assists and a match high 11 digs. Town, Lother and Marc Ross each had two service aces.

The Spartans were led by Steven Marshall's match high 15 kills. Rudy Verhoeff finished with 11. Marshall led the team with seven digs. Verhoeff led the Spartans with four blocks.

The first set was a see-saw affair with the Spartans leading 8-7 at the first break only to see the Wesmen rebound to take a 16-13 lead at the later break. The teams exchanged points to 23-23 when the Wesmen closed out the set taking advantage of a Spartan serving error followed by a Marc Ross kill to give the Wesmen the first set at 25-23.

Winnipeg had the advantage in the second set holding leads of 8-4 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. The Spartans took control of the set scoring six straight points to take a 20-17 lead late in set before eventually winning the set 25-20.

The Spartans in the third set had leads of 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts and continued to over power the Wesmen on their way to a decisive 25-16 win in set number three.

The Wesmen rebounded in the fourth set leading 8-7 at the first technical and expanding their lead to 16-10 at the second break. Winnipeg went on to win the set 25-14 to force a fifth and deciding set.

Winnipeg closed out the match winning the fifth set 15-13.

The Wesmen and Spartans will have a bye in the schedule next week.
