EPIC WIN FOR YOUNG SPARTANS

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team is peaking at the right time. With no fifth year players the young Spartans are beating the odds every match they play. Tonight they defeated the No. 1 team and previously undefeated Universite Laval Rouge et Or 3-2 in an epic 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23 and 20-18 match at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, B.C.

The win puts the Spartans in the CIS gold medal match tomorrow evening at the TCC. The Spartans will play the University of Calgary who defeated the University of Alberta 3-2 in the other CIS semi-final. The losses puts Laval and Alberta into the CIS bronze medal match tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at the TCC.

“Volleyball, especially playoff volleyball, you don’t expect anything,” said Spartans head coach Ben Josephson. “Our adage is ‘pressure busts the pipe’. When a team is under pressure, it is amazing what happens. To their credit, in the fifth they made the plays.  It was two great teams in playoff volleyball.”

Josephson says everything seems to be falling into place for his Spartans, who will host the CIS championships in 2011.” Every team wants to be playing their best volleyball at the end of the season. They all start beginning of the year and they all want to wind-up here. We are now one of the two teams that get to play tomorrow night.  

Josephson commented on how his team has managed to peak and make a Cinderella run to the national championship gold medal match. “I don’t think it has much to do with coaching style but everything to do with what team worked their tails off all season long.  Our team is making the most of every opportunity .Over the last three or four weeks, we have played great teams and our club has risen to the occasion every time.”

Leading the way for the Spartans were Steven Marshall of Abbotsford, B.C. with 25 kills, seven digs and five blocks, leftside Marc Howatson of Victoria with 16 kills and middle Rudy Verhoeff of Calgary with 11 kills and11 blocks. While the Spartans setter Ben Ball of Abbotsford came within three sets of setting a school record for set assists, finishing with 63 assists.

The Rogue et Or had solid performances from power Frederic Desbiens of La Malbaie, Que. with 22 kills and seven digs, leftside Karl De Grandpre of Pierreville, Que. with 14 kills and middle  Jonathan Marcoux of Gatineau, Que. with 10 kills.

The match was a five set marathon that took two hours and 11 minutes to complete. The teams went back and forth for the first three sets ending with Laval up 2-1.

In the fourth set the Laval and TWU matched each other point for point to 18-18. Then Laval got separation with three straight points to lead 21-18. The Rogue et Or maintained that three point margin to lead 23-20 after a kill by Frederic Mondou. With potentially only two points remaining in the match it looked like the Spartans would be playing for bronze tomorrow afternoon. But TWU got the side-out and sent the Spartans Rudy Verhoeff to the end-line. The Spartans leftside Paul Lindemulder of Calgary got a cross court kill to put TWU to within one point, 23-22. Then the strong serving of Verhoeff resulted in three straight attack errors culminating when TWU’s Josh Doornenbal of Edmonton and Steven Marshall blocked Mondue to give TWU the fourth set 25-23.

The Spartans with the help of their many fans carried the momentum into the fifth set. TWU took an 8-5 lead into the changeover, which they extended to 11-7. Then the No. 1 Rogue et Or showed their strength and took five of the next six points to lead 13-12. A ball handing error call on TWU setter Ben Ball gave Laval match point at 14-13. TWU held of the point with a kill by Marshall.  Laval would have one more match point at 17-16, but TWU would take the next two points to lead 18-17. Laval’s Mondou tied the match at 18-18 with a cross court attack. Then TWU got set point with a cross court kill by Marc Howatson. The Spartans Josh Doornenbal served for TWU. Laval went to De Grandpre to tie the set, but the Spartans Rudy Verhoeff was there again to save the Spartans as he and Ben Ball blocked the Laval leftside to give TWU the emotional set 20-18 and the match 3-2.

TWU advances to the CIS championship match for the first time since they won 3-0 over Alberta in 2006.

Match Notes: TWU led in kills 70-64, attack percentage 30.9 percent to 28.6 percent, total blocks 15 to 10 and set assists 68-61, while Laval led in digs 39-36…
