MEN’S VOLLEYBALL BEATS UBC-O IN FIVE-SETTER

SURREY, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western men’s volleyball team earned its sixth victory of the preseason as they rallied from being down 2-1 to beat UBC-Okanagan 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9) Saturday night at Surrey Christian School.

After taking the first set, the Spartans dropped back-to-back games but then were able to answer in the fourth and fifth set to eke out the win. With the victory, Trinity Western is now 6-1 in preseason action, with its only loss coming at the hands of UBC-O.

“I’m really happy again how our guys are responding to adversity and responding to pressure,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “The game had similar flow to the match against UBC [when TWU won 3-2] where we won the first and then they came back and then we finished it off. That might just be how this year goes. We don’t care how we win. It’s just important to find a way to win every time you play an opponent.”

After winning the first set and then dropping the next two, the Spartans received great contributions off the bench from both Nick Del Bianco and Branden Schmidt in the fourth and fifth sets to help TWU get past the Heat.

“We have so many weapons to use that if one guy isn’t firing we can use another guy on any given night,” Josephson said. “It’s great for our team to rely on each other in times of need. It was a good team victory and we’re happy to be moving forward.”

After a see-saw first four sets, the fifth and deciding set was also a tight one up until the Spartans got their eighth point. After the TWU surged ahead into a comfortable lead and then cruised to the finish line.

The Spartans will now travel to Toronto Sunday and will play Guelph Monday and McMaster Tuesday before departing for Qatar Wednesday for the FIVB Club World Championships.
