MEN’S VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO BRANDON IN GOLD MEDAL MATCH
    
EDMONTON – After a gutsy come-from-behind semifinal win over UBC, the defending Canada West champion Trinity Western men’s volleyball team couldn’t duplicate the feat in the Canada West final as they fell in four sets (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15) to Brandon Saturday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

Just like in their semifinal game against UBC, the Spartans dropped the first two sets before winning the third. However, unlike Friday’s match, TWU’s comeback came to an abrupt halt in the fourth set, with Brandon running away with a 10-point win to capture its first ever Canada West gold medal.

Outside hitter Nick Del Bianco (Surrey, B.C.) headed the Spartan offence with 13 kills in the match while Steven Marshall (Abbotsford, B.C.) contributed 12 and Brad Kufske (Abbotsford) also broke the double-digit barrier with 10. Setter Jarrod Offereins (Calgary) had a team-high 34 assists and 14 digs.

Auckland, New Zealand native Sam Tuivai netted a game-high 22 kills and four aces in the victory, putting his respective weekend totals at an impressive 38 and six while fellow New Zealander Roy Ching, hailing from Nelson, added 15 kills for a two-game total of 31 at the Canada West Final Four. Senior setter Garrett Popplestone added a game-high 44 assists and 16 digs.
 
“It was a weird game,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “I’m not sure why, but there wasn’t a lot of excitement in the game, especially for the first couple of sets.

“Brandon played great, but I think I made a major coaching error tonight. I tried to prepare the team in a different way and we were trying a couple of things that really didn’t work out well. I thought our tactics were off and our approach was off and that really put us behind the eight-ball.

“They played great but I really think it was coach error that put us in trouble in those first two sets. Once we adjusted, we played well at the end of the second set and in the third. In the fourth, we had committed so much energy to adjusting things and keeping our heads in it that we just didn’t have it. I don’t think I let their abilities show themselves today with what I asked them to do. Hopefully next week, we can put together a better plan to showcase our team.”

In the first set, Brandon’s Tuivai and Ching spun a half-dozen kills each and both garnered attack percentages over .300 to pace the Bobcats early momentum. An 11-4 run put Brandon up by seven with a 20-13 lead, but the Spartans replied with an 8-3 run led by middle Lucas Van Berkel (Edmonton) to cut the deficit to two. But that was as close as TWU would get. Brandon’s Ching claimed the first set with the last two points.
 
The Tuivai-Ching duo continued their strong play in the second set, again giving Brandon a 20-13 lead. But TWU fought back with blocks or forcing attack errors, closing the deficit to two once more but a Spartans attack error gave Brandon set-winning point.

In the third set, the Spartans made use of aces, blocks, and a few too many attack errors from an excited Bobcat squad to take a late lead and, with a Marshall kill, TWU made it a 2-1 match.
 
In the fourth set, Tuivai went back to work, throwing down nine kills, including three in a 7-2 run that ended the game. The Canada West First Team All-Star forced a powerful kill to the back opposite corner for the 24th point of the set and then Ching finished things off with the decisive point to claim the conference title.
 
Brandon and Trinity Western will both head to the CIS championships at Université Laval, Mar. 1-3 alongside the Alberta Golden Bears, who won the Canada West bronze medal.

Game Notes: Brandon hit .252 compared to TWU’s .175…TWU had a 9-7 edge in blocks…Brandon had a 7-6 advantage in aces.
