Spartans Take Eight
LANGLEY, British Columbia - For the first time in Trinity Western University’s brief seven year history as a member of the CIS the Spartans have swept all of their games to go 8-0 on the weekend.
The Spartans’ volleyball teams were playing in Kamloops, BC against Thompson Rivers University. The eighth ranked women remained in first place in Canada West with a record of 12-2 by taking Friday’s match 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-23) and Saturday’s match 3-1 (25-16, 28-30, 25-15, 25-18). The second ranked men’s volleyball team swept each match to improve to 10-2 winning 25-19, 25-18 and 25-13 on Friday and 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20 on Saturday.
The Spartans’ basketball teams hosted the Lethbridge University Pronghorns at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The women improved to 5-9 with a 60-56 win on Friday and a 68-50 win on Saturday. The men’s team got back to .500 at 7-7 with their two wins, taking Friday’s game 77-70 and Saturday’s shootout 100-82. The women currently sit in fourth place in Pacific Division and are one win behind the third place Victoria Vikes (6-7). The men are in a solid third in the Pacific Division. They are five wins up on the fourth place Simon Fraser University Clan and three wins behind the second place University of Victoria Vikes.
As official members of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, the Spartans compete in six sports in the Canada West division of the CIS: Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball. TWU has won one national championship in women’s soccer in 2004-05, two Canada West titles; one in women’s soccer in 2004-05 and one in men’s soccer in 2005-06. The Spartans have won four CIS championship medals. Women’s Soccer won gold in 2004-05, men’s volleyball took silver in 2004-05 and bronze in 2003-04, and men’s soccer earned bronze in 2005-06
Trinity Western University, located in Langley, B.C., is a not-for-profit Christian liberal arts university enrolling over 3,500 students this year.
