Spartans Honoured


Langley, British Columbia – On Thursday night the Trinity Western University Department of Athletics honoured their student-athletes at their annual Spartans Awards Banquet. The top award of the Spartan Complete Champion went to women’s soccer midfielder Angela Trauter (5th yr, Langley, B.C.), women’s volleyball middle hitter Rhonda Schmuland (5th yr, Calgary, Alta.), men’s volleyball middle hitter Chris Meehan (5th yr, Clearwater, B.C.) and men’s soccer defender Paul Ballard (5th yr, Maple Ridge, B.C.).

The Spartan Athlete of the Year award went to women’s basketball guard Taylor Stuart (5th yr, Surrey, B.C.) and Chris Meehan.

The Scholar Athlete of the Year awards also went to Rhonda Schmuland and Chris Meehan.

The Rookie of the Year awards went to women’s basketball guard/forward Laura Craig (1st yr, Delta, B.C.) and men’s soccer defender Justin Farenik (1st yr, Calgary, Alta.)

The Bahta Melles Award for servant leadership went to Rhonda Schmuland and Paul Ballard.

KineMedics Student Therapist of the Year: Katyanna  Pyde (4th yr, Prince Rupert, B.C.)

Human Kinetics Spartan Athlete Award: Rhonda Schmuland – women’s volleyball, Josh Howatson (4th yr, setter, Victoria, B.C.) – men’s volleyball.

School of Business Spartan Athlete Award: Chris Meehan - men's volleyball

Joshua Van Dyck Memorial Scholarship: Nathan Square-Briggs (2nd yr, midfielder, Richmond, B.C.) – men’s soccer.

Rounding out the evening’s awards were:

CIS Therese Quigley Award: Rhonda Schmuland – women’s volleyball

CIS Libero of the Year: Julie Blackburn (3rd yr, Surrey, B.C.)

Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) 1st team all-Canadian: Chris Meehan – men’s volleyball, Josh Howatson – men’s volleyball, Paul Ballard – men’s soccer.

CIS 2nd team all-Canadian: Nicola Perugini (3rd yr, midfield, Montreal, Quebec) – men’s soccer and Liz Spear (3rd yr, middle hitter, Langley, B.C.)

CIS championship MVP: Chris Meehan – men’s volleyball.

CIS championship all-star: Josh Howatson – men’s volleyball, Jeff Stel (4th yr, outside hitter, Langley, B.C.) – men’s volleyball, Justin Farenik (1st yr, defender, Calgary, Alta.) – men’s soccer, Nicola Perugini – men’s soccer.

CIS all-rookie team: Laura Craig – women’s basketball.

Canada West 1st team all-stars:  Chris Meehan – men’s volleyball, Josh Howatson – men’s volleyball, Liz Spear – women’s volleyball, Paul Ballard – men’s soccer, Nicola Perugini – men’s soccer, Angela Trauter – women’s soccer and Lindsay Rohla (3rd yr, midfielder, Langley, B.C.).

Canada West 2nd team all-stars: Taylor Stuart – women’s basketball, Diaz Kambere (3rd yr, midfielder, Surrey, B.C.) – men’s soccer, Mark Peters (5th yr, forward, Chilliwack, B.C.) – men’s soccer, Drew Roddy (5th yr, forward, Minneapolis, Minn.) – men’s soccer, Ashlee Davison (5th yr, Maple Ridge, B.C.) – women’s soccer.

Canada West Rookie of the Year: Laura Craig – women’s basketball.

Canada West Libero of the Year: Julie Blackburn – women’s volleyball

Staff appreciation: Joanna Dyck– Assistant Event Manager, Rob Stare – Athletics/Human Kinetics Facilities Manager.

The Spartan Complete Champion Award is selected by the Spartan Athletics Awards Committee from the coaches’ nominations and awarded to a varsity athlete who during their career at TWU has been outstanding in the following areas: athletic achievement, quality of character, role model/TWU representative, academics.

The Spartan of the Year Award is selected by the Spartan Athletics Awards Committee from the coaches’ nominations and awarded to a varsity athlete who is outstanding in the following areas: athletic achievement, quality of character, role model/TWU representative, academics.

The Scholar-Athlete Award is selected by the Spartan Athletic Awards Committee and awarded to the male and female graduating varsity athletes who best exemplify scholastic and athletic achievement.

The Bahta Melles Servant-Leader of the Year Award is selected by the Spartan Athletic Awards Committee from the coaches’ nominations and awarded to the varsity athlete who best exemplifies the Spartan Athletics Mission Statement and the attributes of Spartans Hall of Fame member Bahta Melles.

The Male and Female Rookie of the Year Awards are selected from team rookies of the year and voted on by the Spartan Athletics Awards Committee.
