SPARTANS HOST T-BIRDS AND VIKES IN CW WEEKEND SOCCER MATCHES

LANGLEY, British Columbia - This week the Trinity Western University Spartans get into the thick of the things in Canada West when they host perennial rivals the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and the University of Victoria Vikes. The Spartans will play the T-Birds on Thurs. Sept. 11 and the Vikes on Sat. Sept. 13. Matches on both nights are scheduled for 4 p.m. for the women and 6:15 p.m. for the men.

The Spartan women enter this weekend's matches after a disappointing 0-0 draw with the University of the Fraser Valley last Saturday afternoon in Abbotsford. The 4th ranked T-Bird women are currently 1-0-1 having defeated the University of Alberta 3-0 and tying the University of Saskatchewan 1-1 this past weekend. The 7th ranked Vikes enter the weekend at 1-1-0 with a win against Saskatchewan 8-1 and a loss to Alberta 2-1.

On the men's side the 3rd ranked Spartans are coming into this weekend's matches having swept their two weekend matches, 4-1 over the University of Lethbridge on Friday and 1-0 over the University of Calgary on Saturday. The defending CIS championship Thunderbird men have seen their national ranking drop from 1st to 5th after a pair of weekend ties, UBC tied Saskatchewan 2-2 and Alberta 0-0. Victoria split their weekend series by defeating Saskatchewan 3-2 while losing to Alberta 2-1.

These matches are always highly competitive and often preliminary's to the Canada West play-offs. On the men's one or two of these three teams side have represented CW at the CIS Championships since 2004 and on the women's side one or two of these three teams has been at nationals since 2002.
