Sept. 30, 2008

OTTAWA (CIS)
- The Montreal Carabins women and York Lions men once again lead the CIS soccer coaches polls this week, while the defending national champion Guelph Gryphons continue to top the cross country rankings.

In women's soccer, Montreal remains at No. 1 for the third straight week.

The dominating Carabins (8-0) rolled over Concordia 7-0 on Friday night and edged Sherbrooke 1-0 on Sunday, setting a Quebec conference record with eight shutout wins at the start of the regular season.

Montreal, which has outscored its opponents 27-0 so far this fall, has another date with Concordia (0-6-0) on Friday and faces UQAM (3-3-1) on Sunday.

Reigning CIS champion Cape Breton (5-0-2) moves up two spots to No. 2 this week. The Capers blanked StFX, 2-0, and Dalhousie, 1-0, to remain undefeated on the season and keep a slim one-point lead atop the AUS standings.

Rounding out the new women's poll are the No. 3 York Lions (5-1-2), No. 4 Toronto Varsity Blues (7-1-0), No. 5 Manitoba Bisons (6-2-0), No. 6 Laval Rouge et Or (5-2-1), No. 7 Victoria Vikes (5-2-1), No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees (6-2-1), No. 9 Trinity Western Spartans (4-0-2) and No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds (4-1-3).

On the men's side, York (7-0-1), which leads the Top 10 for the fourth consecutive week, also remained undefeated in conference play with a 5-0 victory over Windsor and a 2-1 win over No. 9 Western Ontario.

The perfect weekend allowed the Lions to build a seven-point lead over archrival Western and Laurier atop the OUA West standings. York visits McMaster (2-4-2) and Brock (2-5-1) this week.

Defending CIS champion UBC (6-0-2) remains right behind York in the new Top 10. The Thunderbirds went on the road last week to beat Saskatchewan and Alberta by identical 2-0 scores.

Rounding out the men's poll are the No. 3 Carleton Ravens (9-1-0), No. 4 Victoria Vikes (6-1-1), No. 5 Montreal Carabins (3-0-3), No. 6 Toronto Varsity Blues (6-1-1), No. 7 UNB Varsity Reds (4-0-4), No. 8 Laval Rouge et Or (3-2-2), No. 9 Western Ontario Mustangs (4-2-3) and No. 10 Dalhousie Tigers (4-1-2).
