TWU new No. 1 in women’s volleyball

OTTAWA (CIS) – For the first time in school history, the Trinity Western University Spartans are the number one ranked team in Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s volleyball.

The Spartans, who went winless in their first CIS season back in 1999-2000, had been ranked second in the last four national coaches’ polls leading up to this week. They overtake the three-time defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds, who drop one spot in the new rankings and are now tied with Laval at No. 2.

On the men’s side the TWU men’s volleyball and basketball teams maintain their hold on top five positions in the CIS. The Spartan men’s volleyball team stays strong at No. 3, while the TWU cagers remain at No. 5.

In other CIS sports, Saskatchewan (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), Laval (men’s volleyball) and Calgary (women’s & men’s swimming) all hold on to their No. 1 rankings, while Guelph and Windsor are new national leaders in women’s and men’s track and field, respectively.

Women’s volleyball

The top-ranked Spartans (9-1) enjoyed a bye in the Canada West schedule last weekend and will be back on the court on Friday night for the first of two home games versus the No. 7 Calgary Dinos (6-4). Trinity Western is currently tied atop the conference standings with No. 2 UBC (9-3) but has two games in hand.

The reigning CIS champion Thunderbirds, who had topped the last three weekly polls, drop one position after splitting a doubleheader at home against the Dinos. UBC won the series opener in five sets on Friday but lost the rematch on Saturday, also in five games.     

Men’s volleyball

In their first regular season match since the December break, the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or easily improved to 11-0 in Quebec conference action last Friday with a straight-set win at Montreal (3-9).

Women’s basketball

Saskatchewan (12-2) was dominant in its first weekend as the top-ranked team in the country. The Huskies travelled to Winnipeg and returned with a pair of victories over Manitoba (3-11), 82-67 and 82-68.

Men’s basketball

No. 1 Carleton (14-0) remained the only undefeated team in the country last weekend with a pair of wins in Kingston. The Ravens defeated Queen’s (2-11) 86-73 before downing RMC (0-13) by 121-40.
