Angela Trauter is a force to be reckoned with on the soccer pitch. Not difficult to spot with her white-blond hair, it takes only a few minutes to realize that she is more than the commander of the midfield—she's in charge of this team. Less of a vocal leader, Angela lets her play speak for itself: the deft dribbling, the powerful tackles that usually result in the opposition lying on the ground in the wake of the play, the neatly threaded passes or booming shots; all these are evidence of an athlete who loves "the beautiful game".
Entering her fourth season as a Spartan soccer player, Trauter is one of the more seasoned veterans on this young team. As the co-captain of the squad, she takes the responsibility very seriously. "I've been a captain on other teams, but not at this level, like on a varsity team," she said. "It's an adjustment and a challenge, because I prefer to be more of a background leader, but [coaches] Rob and Graham have been really supportive, putting leadership meetings together so I can develop more as a leader. I know I’m going to have to step up my game on and off the field, because everyone's always watching and adjusting their actions according to what you're doing, so I want to be doing the right things."
Every new season has its challenges, but Trauter has aspirations not just to make CIS Nationals but win the championship before she graduates. If that doesn’t happen, however, she hopes to keep building a stronger team, and be part of a lasting legacy. With life after university still a couple years off, there is little urgency in deciding a career path as of yet, but Angela does want to combine soccer and her Christian faith, laughingly admitting she’ll probably end up working fulltime with AIA despite denying it for the past several years. Right now there are more pressing decisions and responsibilities on the horizon, and Angela Trauter is ready to soldier on following the path God lays before her.
