TWU Spartans (46) vs. the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (59)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spartans Drop Tough Game to T-Birds
UBC's second half surge powers Birds past TWU 59-46

LANGLEY, British Columbia - TWU's 5th year guard Taylor Stuart (Surrey) broke the Spartans single season scoring record midway through second half of a 59-46 loss to the number two ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Thursday night at TWU. Stuart now holds the record with 356 points, passing former Spartan Samantha Hill at 354. Stuart now holds 29 TWU women's basketball records...

The Spartans had a slow start and fell behind 23-6 ten minutes into the contest. But the Spartans hung tough with the visiting T-Birds. TWU used their pressure defense and timely three-point shooting to go on a 19-7 run to trail UBC 30-25 at the half.

Then after falling behind 35-27 to start the second half the Spartans once again increased their defensive pressure to close the gap to three points, 38-35 with 14 minutes remaining.

That would be as close as the Spartans would get. Over the next ten minutes the Thunderbirds outscored the Spartans 18-4 to take a 56-39 lead and blow open the game with five minutes remaining in the game. TWU matched UBC down the stretch, but they were unable to close the gap as the Spartans fell 59-46.

Taylor Stuart with 12 points and Lauren Doubroff (Surrey) with eight points and nine rebounds led the Spartans, while Kelsey Blair (North Vancouver) led the Thunderbirds with a double-double in points 20 and rebounds 15.

The two teams match up again Saturday night at TWU. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

Game Notes: UBC outrebounded TWU 50-27...the Thunderbirds shot 21-49 (43%), while the Spartans shot 17-56 (30%)...TWU had 15 points off of 19 UBC turnovers, while the Thunderbirds had nine points off of 11 Spartan turnovers...
