TWU Spartans (27) vs. the Louisiana State University Tigers (81)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FINAL FOUR TIGERS TOP SPARTANS
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's basketball team lost 81-27 to NCAA Div. I power Louisiana State University Saturday morning at TWU's David Enarson Gym.
The Tigers, who have made five straight NCAA Final Fours, were too much for the Spartans as they controlled much of the action at both ends of the floor. However, TWU, who have only had four practices and were playing with a short bench, had their moments and did some nice things on the floor.
"There were times when we were saying ‘YES' were getting it. Especially at the defensive end as I knew going in that it would be tough to score against a team like this. They are so long and so athletic and so big that it is very difficult to get anything easy," commented TWU head coach Kerby Court after the game. "There were moments on our defense when we executed exactly how we wanted. We would have proper position and force them into a tough shot. Unfortunately we would then forget to box-out on the weak side and they would get the offensive rebound, but as we get into the season we will look to build on that. So there are lots of positives. They are a great team and it is going to be fun to watch them over the season."
Laura Craig (4th year, guard, Delta, B.C.) with eight points, four rebounds and three assists and Lauren Doubroff (4th year, forward, Surrey, B.C.) with seven points led the Spartans, while Taylor Turnbow (Stone Mountain, Ga.) with 14 points, eight rebounds and Courtney Jones (Midfield, Ala.) with 10 points and four rebounds led the Tigers.
Next up for the Spartans is the University of Alberta Tournament Oct. 10-12 in Edmonton.
Game Notes: TWU had the edge in offensive rebounds, 13-12,while LSU had the edge in total rebounds 35-24...the Spartans had 22 turnovers to the Tigers 10...LSU shot 57% (36-63) from the field, while TWU shot 21% (11-52)...at the half LSU led 42-14...
