NAIA NO. 11 WARRIORS EARN SWEEP OF SPARTANS
-DOUBROFF SETS SCHOOL MARK IN REBOUNDS
LEWISTON, Idaho – The Trinity Western University women’s basketball team were stronger this afternoon against the No. 11 Lewis-Clark State College, but were still on the short end of the scoreboard falling 74-45 to the Warriors.
“I’m somewhat disappointed with the margin of victory for them over the weekend, but it was good prep for what we have ahead of us next week,” commented TWU head coach Kerby Court. “Tonight I was pleased that we had a much better effort for the game. We came out strong in the second half and executed well and looked to make a game of it until they went on their run.”
The Spartans found themselves trailing by 20 at the half, 36-16, but unlike last night when they lost 94-44, Trinity Western came out strong in the second half. After an old-fashioned three point play by Tiffany Olsen of Fanny Bay, B.C., who led the Spartans with 13 points on the night, TWU had cut the LCSC lead to nine points, 40-31 with just over 12 minutes remaining. “Tiff had one of her best games of the year and was an offensive force when we needed her,” commented Court.
Unfortunately, it was as close as the Spartans would get as the Warriors closed out the contest with a 34-14 run.
The Warriors outshot Trinity Western 47.4 percent to 28.3 percent, forced 26 turnovers, and outscored the Spartans 17-2 in fast break points. The Warriors also outscored their opponent 32-18 in the paint.
Shooting 3-of-5 from long range, Jasmine Stohr had a game-high 16 points to go with her five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Stohr also had two blocks to add to the five blocks of Kirsi Voshell to help give the Warriors nine blocks on the day.
Voshell finished tied with the Spartan’s Lauren Doubroff of Surrey, B.C. for the game-high nine rebounds, while Kenna Reiter and DePeel helped the Warriors collect 21 assists with six and five, respectively.
The win lifts LCSC to 14-2 overall, while Trinity Western drops to 3-11.
Similar to their win on Friday, the Warriors were aided by accurate shooting from the outside and finished 8-of-16 from 3-point territory.
The Spartans’ offence was led by Olsen, Amanda Knauff of Maple Ridge, who finished with nine points.
The Spartans will now return home to prepare for their prairie road trip as TWU head to Saskatchewan and Edmonton for games against the Huskies and Pandas on Jan. 8-9.
Game Notes: with tonight’s nine rebounds TWU’s Doubroff passes former Spartan Samantha Hill (’05) for top spot on the career rebounding record book. Doubroff now has 471 to Hill’s 470.
