Spartans Top Dogs...
-TWU scored four second half goals for 4-1 win over Saskatchewan

LANGLEY, British Columbia
- The Trinity Western University women's soccer team grabbed their first Canada West league win with Thursday night's 4-1 victory over the visiting University of Saskatchewan.

"I was very pleased that we created a number of scoring opportunities and that we came out with energy tonight,"said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.

The Spartans started strong and had a number of quality chances during the first half of play, but the Huskies' Becky Baker (Saskatoon, SK), made five saves in the first half to keep the score tied at 0-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Thirteen minutes into the second half the goals started to come.

TWU midfielder Alexis Heinz (5th yr, Surrey, BC) opened the scoring in the 58th minute when she headed a cross from defender Erin-Marie Higgins (3rd yr, Surrey, BC) high over Baker and into the top right corner of the Saskatchewan net.

On the ensuing kick-off the Huskies came storming back. Saskatchewan striker Brandy Walker (Lloydminster, SK) tied the match at 1-1 when she broke up the middle, split the Spartan defenders and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the TWU net.

The tie was short-lived as three minutes later TWU's Angela Trauter (5th yr, midfield, Langley, BC) took a through ball from teammate Ashlee Davison (5th yr, forward, Maple Ridge, BC), broke through the defenders and went in alone on the Saskatchewan net. Trauter then slid the ball past a charging Baker to give TWU a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans' Ashlee Davison put the match away in the 69th minute. TWU’s Carlee O'Brien (3rd yr, forward, Nanaimo, BC) set up the goal with a solid run up the left side of the pitch. O'Brien broke past the Saskatchewan back line and neatly played the ball across the box to a waiting Davison. Davison redirected the pass into the wide open Huskie net.

Davison returned the favour to O'Brien two minutes later. Davison got open deep in Saskatchewan territory and played the ball to O'Brien. O'Brien took the short pass and chipped the ball past the Huskie’s Baker to make the final 4-1.

TWU outshot Saskatchewan 17-4 to improve their record to 1-1-1, while the loss dropped the Huskies to 1-2-2.

"Our back line had a solid game today," id Roxburgh. "I was particularly pleased with the play of Brittany Heinrich (3rd yr, defender, Kelowna, BC). She was outstanding today."

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Alberta on Saturday, September 24. Match time at TWU is scheduled for 1 pm. The Huskies have a day off before they take on the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon at UBC.

Match notes: TWU keeper Ali Penner (1st yr, Abbotsford, BC) made one save to earn the victory... Saskatchewan keepers Baker - minutes and Codi Corrigan (Saskatoon, SK) -18 minutes, split the goaltending duties for the Huskies.
