Alexis Heinz scores twice as TWU tops Alberta
Langley, British Columbia - The sixth ranked Trinity Western University women's soccer team scored five second half goals on their way to a 6-0 win over the visiting University of Alberta Saturday afternoon at TWU.
"I'm a little disappointed that we did not put them away earlier, because they have some dangerous players," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "The finishing was much better today and we had a very good team effort."
Alexis Heinz (5th year, Surrey, BC) first goal in the 34th minute off play proved to be the only goal of the opening half, as TWU finished the first 45 minutes with a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans started strong in the second half as Andrea McLachian (1st yr, midfield, Maple Ridge, BC) put the home team up 2-0 on a solid break down the left side of the pitch.
The turning point of the match came in the 61st minute. Alberta's Tina Giannacopoulos (Edmonton, AB) looked like she had brought the Pandas to within one, but TWU keeper Ali Penner (1st yr, Abbotsford, BC) made a leaping grab to keep the two goal lead.
Forty second later, TWU's Alexis Heinz was sent in alone on a through ball from teammate Lindsay Rohla (3rd yr, Langley, BC). Heinz took a hard shot that glanced of Alberta keeper Veronique Mayer-Paradis (Edmonton, AB) and into the bottom left corner of the Pandas' net.
The play took the wind out of Alberta and TWU forward’s took full advantage as they kept pressuring the Panda defenders with strong runs from all directions.
Melanie Ingwersen (1st yr, forward, Abbotsford, BC) made the score 4-0 in the 81st minute, Dana DuMerton (1st yr, forward, Abbotsford, BC) made it 5-0 in the 85th minute and TWU forward Carlee O'Brien (3rd yr, Nanaimo, BC) finished the Spartan scoring in the final minute of play.
The win moves the Spartans to 2-1-1, while the loss drops the Pandas to 1-1-3.
Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Manitoba on Thursday, September 29. Next up for the Pandas is tomorrow afternoon against the University of British Columbia.
Match Notes: Penner and Mayer-Paradis played the full 90 minutes for their respective squads...Alberta held the edge in shots 16-14, but only four were on target, while TWU put ten shots on the Alberta net...
