Spartans Fall to Bisons
First year Manitoba squad tops defending champs

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The fifth ranked Trinity Western University women's soccer team dropped to 2-2-1 with a 3-2 loss to the University of Manitoba Thursday afternoon in Winnipeg, MB. With the win the Bison, who are in their first year in the CIS remain undefeated in Canada West play with a record of 4-0-1.

"The game was back and forth, with good chances on both sides, but we did not show up to fight in the midfield," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "Manitoba played well and showed hunger and desire, while we had trouble coming to grips with the field and the environment."

On an overcast afternoon, the Bisons started the scoring with Caley Miskimmin notching her fifth conference goal of the season at the 10 minute mark. Miskimmin was sent out a breakaway from Desiree Scott.

The Spartans responded with the equalizer at the 22 minute mark on a goal by fifth year forward Ashlee Davison (Maple Ridge, BC), with the assist going to midfielder Angela Trauter (5th yr, Langley, BC). In the 31st minute, the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick but defender Lindsay Rohla (3rd yr, Langley, BC) was unsuccessful as her shot was saved by Bison goal keeper Chera Kirkpatrick. The missed penalty shot propelled the hosts to a second goal. Miskimmin notched her second of the game and sixth of the season. Scott had the assist.

The Spartans answered right back with a goal only two minutes later at the 32 minute mark. Davison matched Miskimmin with her second of the match. Carlee O'Brien (3rd yr, forward, Nanaimo, BC) notched an assist. Both teams traded scoring chances but were neither squad was able to get a go ahead goal as the half ended with the teams tied at 2-2.

The second half was rather uneventful with lots of play at the beginning in the Bisons' end before moving mostly to midfield. The Bisons had a breakaway attempt thwarted by the Spartans keeper Ali Penner (1st yr, Abbotsford, BC) before they did score the eventual game-winner.  Karlie Colpitts received a pass on the left side from Miskimmin and scored in the top hand corner. Miskimmin finished with points on all three goals.

Trinity Western applied the pressure for the remainder of the match but could not score as the Bisons earned their fourth win of the season.

The Bisons hosts UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, September 30 at 3 pm CT, while the Spartans plays at the University of Lethbridge on Saturday, October 1 at noon.
