Slow Start Stings Spartans
TWU falls to rival Victoria 3-2

VICTORIA, British Columbia – A three goal first half saw the University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer team defeat the ninth ranked Trinity Western University Spartans by a score 3-2 at Centennial Stadium tonight.

“We started very poorly and flat and we didn’t really start to apply pressure until the second half,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “Our backs are to the wall now and we will have to rectify our mistakes for Tuesday’s match with UBC.”

From the outset the Vikes were in control of the game. In the first minute Moira Hood (2nd year, Victoria) tested Trinity Western’s keeper Ali Penner (1st year, Abbotsford, B.C.). Hood fired the ball which forced a diving save by Penner.

The Vikes skipped ahead with Amelie Mercier’s first of two goals (5th year, Smithers, B.C.) when she was felled in the box illegally in the sixth minute. Mercier proceeded to take the penalty kick to put it past Penner.

Mercier scored her second goal in the 20th minute off a direct kick when she was fouled again just outside the box. Mercier fired the ball into the top left corner of the net.

The Vikes scored a third goal just two minutes later, off the boot of Carey Gustafson (4th year, Victoria). Gustafson finished a great pass from Hood from the right side of the box.

The only time that the Spartans looked like scoring in the first half was in the 28th minute. A corner taken by the Spartan attack was tipped out from in front of the net by Cheryl Bjorgan (5th year, Kelowna, B.C.), this left the score at 3-0 for the half.

The Vikes continued to pressure the Spartan defense. In the 51st minute Mariel Solsberg (3rd year, West Vancouver) put the ball across the face of the goal however Amy Thorogood (3rd year, Medicine Hat, B.C.) was unable to finish the good work.

Trinity Western came close to scoring in the 65th when Angela Trauter (5th year, Langley, B.C.) crossed a ball across the goal however Katarzyna Gwiazda (1st year, North Vancouver) managed to cut it off safely.

After a defensive miscue from the Vikes, Trinity Western finally scored their first goal in 69th minute. Dana DuMerton (1st year, Abbotsford, B.C.) capitalized on the defensive error a nd put the ball into the back of the net.

In the 81st minute the Spartan’s hit back at the Vikes again with another goal from a speedy Ashlee Davison (5th year, Maple Ridge, B.C.). Davison used her pace to break through the Vikes defenses and shot the ball over the head of Gwiazda.

In the end the Vikes defense held strong to keep the score at 3-2.

Next up for the Spartans (3-3-2) is against the number one ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Tuesday, October 11. Match time at TWU is set for 7 pm. The Vikes (4-4-0) next game will be on Sunday October 9th against the Thunderbirds at Centennial Stadium, kick off is a 2:15pm.
