TWU Spartans (1) vs. the University of Calgary Dinos (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spartans Extend Streak
TWU will open play-offs against Victoria
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team heads into next week’s Canada West play-offs holding a seven game unbeaten streak after they tied the University of Calgary 1-1 on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Langley, BC.
The tie means that the Spartans will match up against the University of Victoria to open the Canada West playoffs next Saturday in Calgary, AB. The match will be a repeat of last season’s Canada West semi-final, where the Spartans defeated the Vikes 1-0 in a shoot out on their way to the CIS National Championship. The winner is guaranteed a berth in this years CIS championship. The other semi-final will see Calgary play UBC. Last season the Dinos beat the Thunderbirds, before falling 4-0 to the Spartans in the Canada West final.
After a balanced first half the Spartans got the first goal in the 44th minute. Andrea Standerwick (1st yr, midfield, Vancouver, BC) picked up a pass in to the left of the goal area and hammered it into the back of the Dinos net to put TWU up 1-0 at the half.
The flow of the match changed in the 66th minute when the game was delayed for 30 minutes while Calgary’s Dani Harris (Calgary, AB) received medical treatment after sustaining a neck injury.
When the match started up again the Dinos were playing with fire and took the game to the Spartans. Two minutes later Calgary’s Stephanie Hoogveld (Calgary, AB) tied the match when she headed a pass from Jessica Horning (North Vancouver, BC) into the top right corner of the TWU net.
Calgary continued to press as they peppered the TWU net with shots. The Dinos outshot the Spartans 10-3 in the second period and if not for a couple of stops by the TWU keeper Ali Penner (1st yr, Abbotsford, BC) the visitors would have notched the go ahead goal.
The match marked the final home game for TWU 5th year seniors Angela Trauter (Langley, BC), Ashlee Davison (Maple Ridge, BC) and Alexis Heinz (Surrey, BC).
